Family of Clarinets
-
These are the clarinets most commonly seen
From Left to Right:
Eb Clarinet - Usually made of grenadilla wood. 19 inches long.
Bb or A Clarinet - The most common. Made of either plastic, hard rubber or grenadilla wood. 26 inches long.
Eb Alto Clarinet - Made of either plastic, hard rubber or grenadilla wood. Around 40 inches long.
Bb Bass Clarinet - Made of either plastic, hard rubber or grenadilla wood. 43 inches long even though there are some models that are longer.
Eb Contra Alto Clarinet - Made of either plastic, hard rubber or grenadilla wood. Around 53” long.
Bb Contra Bass Clarinet - Made of either plastic, grenadilla wood or metal. This particular design is sometimes referred to as The Paper Clip. Between 8.5 - 9 feet long.
I usually have most of these in the shop for you to see when you come by.
There are also several other sizes of clarinets that I have not listed here because they are rarely seen or used.

Bettoney Eb Metal Clarinet
This sounds just like the one in the far left photo. This clarinet was most likely made in the late 30’s or the 40’s. It was made for a military marching band, and I know this because it has “US” engraved on the bell. During the time this instrument was made, plastic clarinets didn’t exist, and wooden clarinets would crack if you took them into the cold weather. Metal was way more durable, and it actually sounds pretty good. Bb metal clarinets are more common just because more of them were made than Eb clarinets. Oh, this clarinet is 17” long.

Bb Contrabass Clarinet "Paper Clip"
This is a contrabass clarinet that I own but it is not in playing condition. These days it is simply a conversation piece. This instrument is the same length as the contrabass clarinet shown on the right.

Bb Contrabass Clarinet & Eb Contra Alto Clarinet
This is how you normally see these instruments, straight not bent like a paper clip. These are the 2 largest members of the clarinet family.
